Our Mission

Our mission is urgent: we must act now to preserve the character, amenity, and tranquillity of the National Landscape Area surrounding Luddesdown.

Protecting Our Natural Beauty

Luddesdown and its surrounding areas form part of an officially designated National Landscape (formerly Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, AONBs). These landscapes are recognised for their exceptional beauty, ecological value, and cultural heritage. LNLS is committed to safeguarding these irreplaceable natural assets from unsustainable development that threatens their integrity.

The Impact of Unsustainable Development

Unregulated or poorly planned development in National Landscapes can cause irreversible harm. It is crucial that planning policies align with conservation efforts to ensure that any development enhances rather than diminishes the local environment. Key concerns include:

Loss of Natural Beauty

Unchecked development can degrade Luddesdown’s unique landscapes by destroying key viewpoints, habitats, and landforms. Therefore, new developments must be carefully assessed to maintain the area’s character.

Impact on Biodiversity

The region supports various plant and animal species, including rare or endangered ones. Poorly managed development can destroy habitats, fragment ecosystems, and reduce biodiversity. Protecting wildlife corridors and ensuring sustainable land use practices are central to our mission.

Increased Carbon Footprint

Development disregarding sustainability contributes to higher carbon emissions, whether by destroying carbon-sequestering woodlands and wetlands or increasing energy consumption. Sustainable planning and green infrastructure are essential to reducing environmental impact.

Pressure on Infrastructure

Luddesdown and the surrounding National Landscape are not designed to accommodate large-scale developments. Overdevelopment can strain local roads, utilities, and public services, leading to congestion, pollution, and diminished quality of life for residents.

Negative Impact on Local Communities

Unsustainable development affects the environment and the fabric of our communities. It can lead to rising housing costs, displacement of residents, and the erosion of the rural community character. Protecting Luddesdown’s heritage and ensuring responsible planning that benefits local people are core objectives of LNLS.

Increased Flood Risks

Irresponsible development can exacerbate flood risks by disrupting natural drainage systems and building on flood-prone land. Planning must incorporate flood mitigation strategies to protect the landscape and local communities.

Loss of Cultural Heritage

Luddesdown has a rich history; historic buildings, archaeological sites, and traditional landscapes form its identity. However, inappropriate development can erode this heritage, making strict conservation policies vital.

Diminished Recreational Opportunities

The area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy walking, cycling, and nature watching. However, uncontrolled development can restrict access to recreational spaces and degrade the natural experience for both residents and visitors.

Our Approach to Sustainable Development

LNLS advocates for a balanced approach considering environmental, social, and economic factors. We believe that development should be:

Sustainable

Incorporating green infrastructure, renewable energy, and eco-friendly design.

Community-Driven

Engaging with residents to ensure their voices are heard in planning decisions.

Biodiversity-Focused

Prioritising the protection of natural habitats and species.

Culturally Sensitive

Preserving the historical and rural character of Luddesdown.
